Obama Win Renews Secession Petitions; Puts Spotlight on States' Rights

In the wake of President Barack Obama’s re-election, more than 60,000 Texans have signed an online petition calling for the Lone Star State to secede from the United States and they’re not the only ones upset.

Residents from more than 20 states have filed petitions on the White House “We the People” website to express their contempt for the election results.

The website serves to give “all Americans a way to engage their government on the issues that matter to them” by way of online petitions, which anyone can create. The website states that if a petition garners more than 25,000 signatures, the administration will review the petition and issue a response.

Host Carmen Russell-Sluchansky spoke with Anthony Champagne, a political science professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, to discuss the petitions.
