
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., shocked the Republican Party on Thursday morning when he announced his resignation after serving eight years in the U.S. Senate. The now-former Congressman will start in January as president of the Heritage Foundation.
Many are now wondering who will fill the vacancy left by DeMint. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a Tea Party-backed Republican, will appoint someone who will serve through the end of 2014 and run in a special election that November. That election will decide who will serve out the remaining two years of DeMint’s term.
