The nomination is to to replace Hilda Solis, who stepped down as Secretary of Labor in January.
President Obama called Perez, who currently heads the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, a tireless worker for equal opportunity and a champion for workers. However, Republicans have criticized Perez, suggesting that his department was torn by ideological pressures.
